Lapidary Grinding wheels

When cutting gems, it is important to have the right lapidary tools to complete each work. These tools will make all of the difference in both finishing the job and your financial position. Also it's vital to buy these tools from a trustworthy manufacturer and they should also be of high quality.

Lapidary tools are used for the cutting, shaping and finishing of gems. These tools will make the job less complicated: diamond band saw, grinders, trimming saws, flattening machines, drills and drill bits, and carbide cutting tools.

There are plenty of sorts of saws and most use a mixture of the following:

6in. faceter saws

10in. trim saws

12, 14, 18 and 24in. saws Diamond band saws

Scroll saws

Tilt table band saws

Wire saws Core Drill saws

Ring saws

For grinding most use diamond wheels. For people that use silicon carbide wheels use principally 8 or 10in. wheels and 100 and 220 grit.

For sanding and polishing the most well liked are the silicon carbide sanders, but discs and wide belt sanders are used also. Buffing with leather is the most well liked, with felt, cotton and muslin also used.

The most favored polishes are tin oxide and cerium oxide.

Coolants - water based coolants are good for tiny saws. For the bigger slab saws most use oil and the most well liked is Almag, but there are others like: Pella oil, Roc-oil and Lubri-Kool.

Some other tools are: cutters, snips and scissors; files; pliers; hammers and mallets; and tweezers.

Learning the way to use the tools and machinery is important, so follow the rules and practice on the less costly stones before venturing on to your good stones.

Lapidary tools can be costly, so it's a brilliant idea to join a club and then you may use their tools. Also research and ask many questions on what's the best tool for the job. As with any tool if you take care of them, then they will do the job you need them to do.

Some helpful tips:

Use baking soda in the tumbler for the last cycle to scrub stones.

For polishing use the coarse side of the leather attached to a convex head over the rubber face with wire.

Employ a heat gun for mounting gemstones on dopsticks.

For polishing jade use Linde A on a muslin buff.

A butcher's block makes an excellent solid and smooth work bench.

Soak stones in bleach to enhance the color, but ensure that once this is done they're then neutralised with soda or they will tarnish the mounting.

Vinegar helps with polishing facets, particularly soft materials.

There are a lot of tools to buy so do the research to discover which are the best ones to do the work and get the most impressive results.
