Lapidary is the art of polishing stones as well as the person who does the stone polishing. There are many different ways to polish stones. The most common way is using a Rock Tumbler which smoothes the edges of stones and usually gives them a nice shine. Rock tumbing does not shape the stones. If you want to cut the stones to a specific size or shape you need to use more advanced techniques using more sophisticated lapidary equipment.
A lapidary saw is a large saw which slices through the centre of the stone. A Cabbing Machine is machine for shaping your stones and making shapes such as cabochons which are the oval shaped stones most frequently used in rings. If you want to created faceted stones which is the lapdiary technique used for transparent stones such as diamonds then you need a Faceting Machine.
